Rare earth market update on October 19, 2026

On Monday, China’s rare earth market as a whole maintained a weak sideways operation. Against the background of a relatively balanced supply-demand relationship, traders had low enthusiasm for entering the market, product prices fluctuated within a narrow range, and new orders were relatively few.

Today, the prices of praseodymium-neodymium oxide and gadolinium oxide decreased by approximately RMB 3,000/ton and RMB 3,000/ton, respectively, while the price of erbium oxide increased by approximately RMB 2,000/ton.

According to Chinatungsten online, strong environmental protection and anti-illegal-mining efforts, persistently weak downstream demand, and high energy prices are multiple factors jointly causing the slow release of production capacity by rare earth manufacturers. Coupled with limited imports of overseas rare earth products, this further constrains the increase in spot market supply. From the demand side, affected by tight working capital of downstream rare earth enterprises and the difficulty of significant short-term raw material price increases, market inquiry activity was relatively low.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that in September 2026, the added value of industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 5.5% year-on-year in real terms, with the growth rate accelerating by 0.3 percentage points from the previous month. Among them, the chemical raw material and chemical products manufacturing industry increased by 2.4%, the ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry increased by 1.6%, the non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry decreased by 5.1%, the general equipment manufacturing industry increased by 8.5%, the special equipment manufacturing industry increased by 12.1%, the automobile manufacturing industry increased by 6.7%, the electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing industry increased by 8.1%, and the computer, communication, and other electronic equipment manufacturing industry increased by 16.4%.
