Tungsten Heavy Alloy Applications - 1

Tungsten heavy alloy has been widely used for its excellent engineering properties. Its applications are as follows:

1.0 Aerospace and Missile Application

1.1Gyroscope Component
Gyroscope is the heart of navigation and control systems for satellite, aircraft, missile, and spacecraft. The stability of a gyroscope is proportional to its rotational mass. The gyro rotor rotates at a speed of 20000 revolutions per minute over the course of the operation, so that the material has sufficient strength to withstand centrifugal force. And tungsten heavy alloy is the ideal material.

1.2 Missile
In addition to the gyro rotor, tungsten heavy alloy is also used as a guiding device in missiles.

1.3 Aviation Industry
Tungsten heavy alloy can help balance and stabilize the control surfaces of ailerons, elevators and rudder sections.

2.0 Conventional Weapons Application

2.1 Penetrator
In order to increase the projectile kinetic energy, and improve the penetration ability, some countries have been using tungsten heavy alloy in the design and development of APDS. Tungsten heavy alloy was developed in early 70s, and was transferred to use in a relatively short period of time. At present, apart from America, many countries in Western Europe have been using tungsten heavy alloy projectile materials.

2.2 Small Bore Bullet
General Electric Company (GE) has studied 97W 2.1Ni-0.9Fe alloy, whose warhead weighs 80 grams, and it can breakdown military steel plate whose angle 60, inch 1 only with the limit speed of 3580 ft / sec.

3.0 Machinery Manufacturing & Instrument Application

3.1 Die-casting Die
Die casting is a kind of precision casting process with few chips and no chips, which can directly produce components of complex shapes. With Simple process, high yield, no holes, saving raw materials, especially in ferrous metal die-casting mold, its working conditions are very harsh. It must withstand high temperature and pressure and Erosion of liquid metal flow, with resistance of corrosion, oxidation and thermal shock. Tungsten heavy alloy are good materials for die casting die for its good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance.

3.2 Oscillating Weight in Watches
Oscillating weight in automatic watches use the slight movement of the arm to drive spring automatic winding under the inertia effect of oscillating weight. Therefore, it is required that oscillating weight material should have enough proportion, no magnetism, certain strength and good corrosion resistance. At present, some famous Swiss automatic watches are made of this kind of alloy. The composition is mostly W-NiCu alloy. When used, it is plated with gold or nickel on the surface of oscillating weight parts to improve the corrosion resistance and beauty. Tungsten alloy is also used as automatic weighing material for automatic watches in China.

3.3 Others

3.3.1 Tungsten heavy alloy is used to make knife clamps, especially boring bars.

3.3.2 Tungsten heavy alloy is used as counterweight of high crankshaft that used for chain saws and small engines.

3.3.3 EDM electrode and electrochemical spark machine is also manufactured by tungsten heavy alloy.
