Rare earth market update on October 13, 2026
China's rare earth market remains sluggish. Amidst a mix of bullish and bearish factors, sentiment among major traders of light and heavy rare earths is somewhat pided. New orders are limited, and industry players hold a lukewarm outlook for the future market.
In the light rare earth market, prices continue to fluctuate within a narrow range, primarily because suppliers are reluctant to lower prices to move stock, while buyers show little enthusiasm for restocking. Today, prices for praseodymium oxide, praseodymium-neodymium oxide, and praseodymium-neodymium metal are hovering around RMB 773,000/ton, RMB 740,000/ton, and RMB 898,000/ton, respectively.
In the medium-heavy rare earth market, affected by oversupply and the currently relatively high price of terbium, the price of terbium oxide continued to fall, with quotes adjusted downward by approximately RMB 50,000/ton. Despite this decline, the current price of terbium oxide remains about 8.83% higher than at the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, prices for erbium oxide and holmium oxide have risen by approximately RMB 15,000/ton and RMB 2,000/ton, respectively.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in September 2026, my country's automobile production and sales reached 2.99 million and 2.956 million units, respectively, representing year-on-year declines of 8.7% and 8.4%. Within this total, production and sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) reached 1.814 million and 1.823 million units, up 12.2% and 13.6% year-on-year; NEV sales accounted for 61.6% of total new vehicle sales. During the same period, exports of complete vehicles totaled 1.053 million units, a year-on-year increase of 61.4%, with NEV exports accounting for 571,000 units, a surge of 157.2% year-on-year.
