Rare earth market update on August 20, 2026

The domestic rare earth market as a whole showed a pattern of mixed rises and falls, with some praseodymium-neodymium product prices continuing to decline, while some mainstream heavy rare earth product prices have stopped falling and rebounded.

Today, the prices of praseodymium oxide and praseodymium-neodymium oxide decreased to RMB 773,000/ton and RMB 719,000/ton, respectively; the prices of erbium oxide and holmium oxide increased by approximately RMB 5,000/ton and RMB 3,000/ton, respectively.

On the light rare earth market, trading activity was relatively low, and price negotiations between buyers and sellers were intense. In order to maintain normal enterprise operations, suppliers generally had strong willingness to exchange price for orders. However, affected by the approaching "Golden September" consumption peak season and the good development trends in emerging markets, short-term downstream demand is expected to increase, and the decline in product prices may narrow. On the medium and heavy rare earth market, although some product prices have risen, this does not mean that prices can continue to rise, mainly because the market is still constrained by weak downstream buying interest and relatively ample spot supply.

In terms of news: Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that in July 2026, among 626 products in industrial enterprises above designated size, 279 products saw year-on-year growth in output. Among them, steel products were 116.46 million tons, decreased by 4.1% year-on-year; cement was 126.71 million tons, decreased by 11.6%; ten non-ferrous metals were 6.97 million tons, increased by 2.5%; ethylene was 3.48 million tons, increased by 0.1%; automobiles were 2.529 million units, decreased by 0.1%, among which new energy vehicles were 1.55 million units, increased by 29.9%; power generation was 943.9 billion kWh, decreased by 0.1%; crude oil processing was 53.11 million tons, decreased by 15.8%.
