Light or Wave? Future Light -- Terahertz Wave

Terahertz wave refers to an electromagnetic wave whose frequency is 0.1~10 THz (wavelength at 0.03~3mm), or THz.

From 2004 onwards, the world's technology powers are devoted to the terahertz wave of very large scientific research strength, and even the discovery of terahertz waves with graphene, agreed that it will also be one of the top ten technologies to change the future of mankind.

It is understood that the future application of terahertz wave is very wide, even for some of the existing technology is subversive nature of change. Terahertz wave known applications are:

1. Security. This is the application of terahertz wave has been achieved, the use of security machine of THz wave has low radiation, quick response, very accurate detect force knife, gun, gasoline, drugs and other risk factors. The future will replace the existing X light security machine.

2. Medical examination. Terahertz waves have unique spectrum, and medical personnel will be able to detect DNA or molecules directly through terahertz waves in the future, and can find early causes for human beings, such as early cancer cells.

3. Unmanned driving. Terahertz has very wide bandwidth, can more effectively monitor more objects, and collect more information. Google, Tesla and other unmanned companies have developed Ethernet terahertz research as the main direction.

4. National defence. Because of the short wavelength of terahertz, far less than the microwave and millimeter wave wavelength, can achieve higher accuracy and penetration is far stronger than the laser radar, when terahertz wave used in military radar, F22 and F35 may no longer be "hidden" aircraft.

5. Signal communication. Terahertz has a faster transmission rate and is said to have reached 10Gbit/s. The future of mobile 6G/7G networks will depend on it.

Terahertz wave has unlimited development potential, but its development is not as smooth as graphene, the current terahertz wave technology bottleneck is the wave of material problems. At present, terahertz instruments are very expensive and bulky. This is mainly due to its emission source material and shielding materials are not ideal.

Fortunately, China is not only a big producer of graphene, but also a large country with tungsten reserves. If graphene is to be compared with two new two-dimensional materials such as single layer two tungsten disulfide, graphene is more likely to be widely used to produce terahertz instruments, largely because of its enormous price advantage, the single layer two tungsten sulfide has a relatively high performance advantage, and is suitable for special applications in military, aerospace, science and technology and other special fields. Science and technology have unlimited possibilities. In the future, terahertz waves will certainly have many unknown functions waiting for us to discover.
