Tungsten carbide measuring rod is used to detect inner bore of products using tungsten carbide bars of certain established specifications. With the hardness of 90HRA, tungsten carbide measuring rod has excellent abrasion resistance, long service life, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and is less susceptible to damage and endure high temperature. Its life expectancy is 20-30 times longer than that of steel.

There are four main measuring projects of tungsten carbide measuring rods: aperture, hole center distance, hole position and hole inclination.

China's First Tungsten Carbide Rod

China's first tungsten carbide rod of φ2 mm was successfully developed and manufactured in 601 factory in September 7,1958, and from then on, China got rid of the control from foreign companies and filled the gap of tungsten carbide rods production in Chinese history.  
 
In March 1958, the task of developing tungsten carbide rods of φ2 mm was given by the state to 601 factory. Factory formed a research group and continued to explore in this field. After an arduous exploration, the group used paraffin to make a mold, and found out the best wax type and optimal dosage. The proper lubricant reduced friction between the mixture and mold wall. A small gadget, which shaped like a small pagoda was put into the mold to spread operating pressure of materials, and thus solved the problem of pressed film. Through constant trying, the group succeeded inimproving the cutting efficiency of rods. As a result, China can finally produce its own tungsten carbide rods without relying on its import, and began to meet the needs of domestic mining explorations.

Tungsten Carbide Rod Sintering Process

Sintering is the final process of tungsten carbide rods forming, which directly affects the densification and uniformity of the chemical properties of products. It is closely related to product performance and accuracy. Currently, the sintering of tungsten carbide rods is often conducted by adopting the methods of vacuum sintering, hot isostatic pressure (HIP) and low-pressure sintering. 
 
The density and bending strength of tungsten carbide rods will be significantly improved and service life be greatly extended if it is put in a hot isostatic press at a pressure of 80 ~ 150MPa and a temperature of 1320 ~ 1400 ℃ and its porosity will be also reduced to 1/20~1/100 or even lower. Methods of vacuum sintering plus hot isostatic pressing can improve product quality more effectively than adopting HIP only. It is why it has become the primary means of producing high-quality cemented carbide rods. 
 
Advantages of low pressure sintering technology is that it can effectively reduce micro-porosity, balance cobalt layer thickness, eliminate cobalt pool to a large extent, and prevent polycrystalline phenomenon caused by high-pressure technologies, while its cost is much lower than that of high-pressure technologies.

Tungsten Carbide Rod Surface Roughness

Tungsten carbide rods have high hardness and abrasion resistance and thus its grinding process is quite complicated, which includes: coarse grinding, fine grinding, accurate grinding and polishing. There are two types of polishing: matte polishing and mirror polishing. And if necessary, it will have to be supplemented by electrolytic reaming. 
 
Grinding can help cemented carbide rods get higher machining accuracy and lower surface roughness. Grinding precision usually reaches IT6 ~ IT7 tolerance grade, while surface roughness reaching Ra1.25 ~ 0.16μm. If tungsten carbide rods are polished, their surface roughness will be up to Ra0.1 μm, which makes its surface be smooth as that of a mirror. Its dimensional accuracy and shape accuracy can be within 1um, the error of which is equivalent to 1/70 thickness of human hair or even thinner. 
 
Surface roughness Ra of tungsten carbide rods before accurate grinding should be smaller than 6.3um.
